Today commemorates a huge turning point towards a magnificent dream I could barely imagine just a few years ago.
In fact, a few years ago ALL of my imagination and LIFE force energy were completely consumed by the feeling of dread experienced when you’re no longer in the right place, when the right path has somehow turned into the wrong path, but, you have no clue where to go.
The misery continued to set in until I was sick with stress and anxiety, and no longer functioning at an optimal state of health.
The Joy was long gone.
In its place was constant pain in my body, anxiety about death, sleeplessness, ER visits because I was sure I was having a stroke (1st ever anxiety attack), 5 doctor visits in a year to figure out what the hell was wrong with me.
I began to worry I was becoming my grandmother, a hypochondriac, who eventually became sick to death with cancer.
While waiting for results back from an MRI to rule out MS, I received a message.

This was no ordinary message, though, and however bizarre it may seem, it fiercely shook my soul awake and changed my life that very minute.
It was received while experiencing a rare moment of peace and silent enjoyment, in my pool on a perfect summer day.
Suddenly, I heard a voice (that was not mine) tell me I was not sick, yet, but, I was going to be if I stayed.
It was now time to leave.
And Joy was the path to peace.
I had no idea what I was supposed to do with that unexpected memo, but, I was so overwhelmed by a rushing, enveloping sensation of love and ecstasy, all I could do in that moment was bask in the experience.
Still reeling from the memory of all those love chemicals flooding my brain, the upcoming work week took on a whole new perspective for me.
The high stress corporate job I’d been so successful at, and wrapped up so much of my identity in, and gleaned so much pride, economic security, and ego satisfaction from, was now the source of my illness.
Literally.

As Divine Timing would have it, the very next weekend a dear, life-coach friend of mine was hosting a workshop called ‘Busting Your Beliefs’.
I would discover that day I had a very solid belief about my circumstances.
I was really good at my corporate job, and I made a lot of money, and as a result, there was no easy way out.
By lunchtime, I had identified and established a new belief…It really could be that easy.
I walked out of that magical workshop feeling incredibly inspired, and with fresh sparks of a long ago vision of a wellness center (with that very same life coach friend), but still with no plans or concepts of what to do next.
Just a new belief.
And, boy did it take.
Two weeks later I was spontaneously resigning from my 13 year career in the engineering world, with no plan.
Just a new belief.
As you might suspect, all my weird symptoms disappeared without a trace.
A month after leaving, I went for my annual checkup and labs, and ALL my previously elevated cholesterol, hormone, and blood pressure levels were now normal.
I honestly figured I would take a few months off to locate my Joy, snaz up my resume, and eventually find the next place to land in corporate America.
Because, you know, that's where the skill set and the money was at..

Funny thing happened when it came time to get serious about getting a new job.
I went through the motions, created a beautiful resume, built a LinkedIn profile, and polished up my impeccable references.
I started going on interviews, headhunters hitting me up left and right, I was about to land a job, the pressure was on to hold out for just the right position.
Soon enough, the closer I got, I started to feel sick again, pain in my body, sleepless nights, and eventually experienced a day long anxiety attack that really shook me up because WTF am I supposed to do with that??? I have to make a living.

Esther and Gerry Hicks’ book “Ask and It Is Given” teaches you to listen to your body, and your emotions, because they are your very own, built in, personal barometer, to help guide you on your path.
A reliable indicator of not that way, this way.
I’d been listening to the audio book a great deal leading up to my epiphany in the pool, and I’d come to trust that wisdom.
My body was now telling me NO! NO! NO! Much to my dismay, it was time for yet another leap of faith, but this time, it would be much further outside my self-imposed box.
So I had to ask myself that pivotal question.
What could I do, that I would love enough, to work long and hard for, and still feel inspired every day? I’d already tossed around some ideas earlier in the year, and I was very sure I did NOT want to own a B&B.
I’d done the research, and glamorous it was not.

But, there was this one thing I’d had a passion for 20+ years.
And, even though in my mind it was just a ‘hobby’, I’d taken a few Reiki classes over the years, and practiced on the total low-down with close friends who shared my fascination with energy medicine.
I also had my own Healing Touch Practitioner, whom I’d finally reestablished a relationship with after having dropped off for several years.
Certainly I believed in the power of energy medicine and had seen its benefits countless time, in myself and others.
I’d just never believed in my own gifts enough to consider it a viable career path for me.
But, the idea of it excited me, making my mind race with ideas and dance with the possibilities, and I’m reminded again to listen to my body.
To let it guide me.

I began to explore what it would take to become an energy medicine practitioner for real, legitimately, professionally.
After extensive research and a great deal of heart felt deliberation, I decided to stray from the Reiki model I was most familiar with, and pursue certification through the Healing Touch Program instead.
I was highly attracted to their well-established relationship with the medical community and the Holistic Nursing Association, and especially that the program was founded and continues to be led by nurses.
I was mostly drawn to their strict standardized credentialing process, which resulted in them becoming the ONLY energy medicine modality to achieve not one, but two national accreditations (ANCA American Nurses Credentialing Center & NCCA National Commission for Certifying Agencies).
For me, this was key.

I continued to follow the feeling; the building excitement, the joy, the passion.
I’ve come to believe in a new story for myself.
One of my new role as healer in my community, instead of only in my tight-knit circle.
A story of limitless possibilities, really.
To date, I’ve completed through Level 4 and 80 class hours of the Healing Touch Program curriculum, and am now in my yearlong apprenticeship.
The next year is going to be a powerful journey of self-awareness and personal growth, and confidence building as I gain experience and build my professional practice.
This week marks the opening of my beloved practice, Healing Branches Energy Medicine, and my path to certification.
I have a great deal of work to do, with a full curriculum of reading, essays, case studies, documented client sessions, and more class hours, but, I am excited to “just do the work”, as our HTP founder Janet Mentgen would say..
