We carry women's clothing, jeans and more We’re two coffee-drinking, pajama-loving, slightly crazy best friends.
See, when Leslie unknowingly moved in directly next door to Stacy back in 2011, neither one knew how this story would unfold.
Living next door, both with young kids (there’s 5 littles!) we ended up spending a lot of time together.
We had that kind of a crazy best friend bond right from the start - the kind of friendship where we’d tromp through the snow in boots and pajamas on those cold winter days.
The kids could play, we could interact as adult humans, and managed to get through the craziness of our individual lives together.
For those of you that know us well, you know we both have special needs kids - and as a mom with a special needs kid, when you find another mom that also has a special needs kid - you know they just *get it*.
In the early years of our friendship we formed a bond over being able to just relax in each other’s company and not explain our kids (sometimes weird) behaviors to each other.
In 2012, shortly after baby “Peety”, the littlest of the Hawthorne kids was born, we came up with this crazy notion that it would be fun to sell things online.
We made our first order of custom items and sent all of our collective money off to China, wondering if we’d ever hear back.
6 weeks later, our first items arrived and we ran a deal on a daily deal site.
From there, we continually turned over our profits into investing in our little business… mostly we did it for fun… until later that year we had shipped out over 8,000 packages - from our living rooms, with our kids (yep, 5 kids including a newborn).
In the late fall of 2013 we had run a particularly amazing product where we hit the market and price point at exactly the right time.
At the time it was a huge leap of faith, but looking back it was exactly what propelled our business from being something that was “just for fun” to “oh hey this is for real”.
When UPS dropped 40 cartons off to the garage, and a couple of days later when my mom had a near-panic attack over the sea of packages in my living room, there was no looking back.
We started eyeing spots outside of our living room for a space to call “Hawthorne”..

In early Spring of 2014, we committed to the West Michigans Women’s Expo - a large local event that we hoped would allow us to sell off some of our excess inventory that had collected after running so many online flash sales.
It was the first time we had presented Hawthorne to a local audience, and we were floored by the positive feedback and reactions we received from so many that attended that first show.
Shortly after, we signed our first lease and had our official Brick and Mortar.

The original Hudsonville storefront was planned as a shipping center -a place for us to store all of our goods outside of our homes and a place to efficiently ship our product.
The space was set up in a little house right off Chicago drive, and the front room we decided could be a showroom of sorts that would open once a month or so for ladies to come and shop.
Well, that lasted all of about a month and shortly after we hired our first employee and began having regular hours.

As Hawthorne grew, we leased a second space in downtown Zeeland in the spring of 2015.
In the Fall of 2015 we moved our Original Hudsonville location to a much larger spot on 28th ave, which is where Hawthorne Hudsonville currently resides.
In the Fall of 2016 we moved our Zeeland location out to a larger space on Byron Center ave in Wyoming.
Spring of 2017 brought an expansion to a 3600 square foot warehouse, dedicated full time store managers, and the launch of our official Hawthorne wholesale brand.
Today Hawthorne maintains a full and part time staff of approximately 25 ladies..
