Most are unaware of Allen Hamilton (1798-1864) who was among other things, a deputy clerk in the U.S.
Land Office, served as Sheriff of Allen County, was Fort Wayne's Postmaster, spent a year as a State Senator and was President of the Allen Hamilton National Bank.
That was not all though, Mr.
Hamilton was not just an influential member of Fort Wayne Society, he also also gracious enough to allow his land downtown near Lewis and Calhoun streets to be used by the local amateur baseball teams as a playing field and practice grounds.
This was the first field used for baseball on record in Fort Wayne.
