Gölköy, Ordu ilinin bir ilçesidir.Yüzölçümü 349 km²'dir.
İlçe merkezi Ordu-Sivas karayolu üzerine kurulmuştur ve Ordu merkeze uzaklığı 63 km'dir.
İlçe sınırları içerisinde iki doğal göl vardır: Ulugöl ve Gök Gölü.
Ulugöl, 30.000 m²'lik alanıyla Ordu ilinin en büyük doğal gölü özelliğini taşır.
Ulugöl İlçeye 15 km mesafede bulunurken, Gök Gölü ilçe merkezinde yer almaktadır.Tarihİlçenin tarihi Ordu ili ve yöresinin tarihi ile birlikte incelenmelidir.
Tarihte Hapsamana bugünki ismi ile Gölköy olarak geçen yerde tarih içerisinde çiftçilikle ve madencilikle uğraştığı belirlenen Tiberanlar, Kahilbler, Mossoinkler adı verilen kavimler yaşamışlardır.
1204 yılında TrabzonRum devletinin kurulması ile Rumların egemenliğine girmiştir.Türklerin boylar halinde bölgeye gelip yerleşmeleri Rum devletinin kurulmasından daha önceki tarihlere rastlamaktadır.
Anadolu selçuklu devletinin İlhanlı devleti'nin egemenliğine girmesi ile Anadoluya gelen Türk boyları kendi beyliklerini kurmuşlardır.
