Charlie Trapp grew up learning to play guitar at eight years old in his home town of Front Royal, Va.
and has turned into an accomplished guitarist who teaches in an unconventional way..

Trapp, elected to be June’s Artist of the Month with the Arts Alliance, received his first guitar through the Boy Scouts for fundraising efforts as a child.
“It had plastic tuners and you couldn’t tune it,” said Trapp..

“After six months my parents bought me a little better guitar,” he said.
Trapp took lessons from a teacher in Front Royal as a young person and was inspired to play by a mother who was a big fan of show tunes..

At 13 he moved with his family to Detroit and became a fan of Motown music.
His family moved to Annapolis at age 17, and his music took a turn in a new direction..
.
Trapp told the story of the first person he met in the bathroom while attending a new high school that influenced his music.
This person wore a trench coat, and there was music coming from beneath his coat.
“It was free-form jazz which was quite unusual,” said Trapp.
It was at that point that Trapp started playing this type of music which gave him a new perspective..

He played improvisational music for a dance company after he graduated from the University of Maryland with a degree in agronomy.
Trapp was fascinated with organic farming during his college years and had a vision that organic farming was the future, but there wasn’t much being invested in this novel approach at the time, and prospects for employment in that field were not promising, he said..

After graduating, he started a career working for the Department of Agriculture in Beltsville, but after a few years became disenchanted with this line of work and went back to Montgomery College to study classical guitar..

While there, he also worked in the carpentry field, and discovered he could play music on unconventional instruments such as power saw blades and used this in his musical act with a dance company, which was all improvisational..

He hung the blades and a set of open end wrenches and other tools from a rack and would play them along with his guitar.
He would also play miscellaneous flutes and actually “became a one-man-band so to speak,” he said..

Subsequent to his Montgomery College stint, he went back to University of Maryland to study music composition.
He also played in a blues jazz band for a couple of years early in his career..

Trapp moved to Mt.
Airy in 1994 and has been teaching guitar there for eight years.
When he took lessons early in his life, he learned to read music but mostly played by ear just listening to records and the radio which demonstrated a real musical talent..

Some of his influences early on were jimmy Hendrix, the Rolling Stones and John McLaughlin, an English guitarist, bandleader and composer, from Duncaster, England who came to the U.S in the 60’s and played with Miles Davis, among others.
McLaughlin was playing acoustic guitar at that time then went strictly electric, said Trapp..

McLaughlin’s music influenced Trapp, because it was “loud, powerful, complex music” and became known as fusion music.
Trapp loves traditional music as well and is a fan of virtually all genre of music..

Trapp’s teaching style is somewhat unconventional in that he does not teach using traditional classroom song books the way a teacher might in a public school music class using a standard notation method..

Instead, he uses a tablature method for some students giving the students an opportunity to be creative and play music they want to play.
He currently has about 25 students, and teaches at his home studio four days a week and one day a week in Frederick..
.
Trapp said, “I don’t grade my students, instead I try to inspire them to want to love playing.” Most of his lessons are one on one with his students.
He finds this works best for both him and the student, giving them his undivided attention and believes they learn more effectively this way..

He has a musical family having taught his teenage son how to play guitar and has a daughter who plays piano..

Trapp is truly an eclectic musician who performs on guitar with Dr.
Mark Runkles on saxophone and oboe at Super Foods on Main, on S.
Main Street, during the Arts Alliance’s Third Thursday performances..

Trapp also performs with a fellow guitarist at the Brick Ridge Restaurant, 6212 Ridge Road, Mt.
Airy, on the second Tuesday of the month.
