A local builder called William Raeburn Copeland owned a single shop on the site of the present building by 1911.
In 1916 he decided to demolish the existing shop and built the present four-bay, two-storied commercial and residential block, callling it RAEBURN on the frieze, where the name continues to puzzle all who are unfamiliar with William Copeland’s middle name.

The new shops had a variety of tenants over the years: 143 a draper’s; 145-147 the celebrated chemist’s shop still occupied by Greenwell and Thomas (their Bottom Shop as opposed to their older Top Shop of 1919 at 1 Katoomba Street); and 149, first a coal merchant’s and then another draper’s.
