Detailed description is The Greece Police Athletic League was founded by retired Greece Police Chief Gerald Phelan.
The program is used as a way to foster positive community involvement with the police department.
Chief Phelan's goal was to keep children off of the streets while involving them in sports with officers from the department.
Over time, the organization has provided many different sporting leagues including boxing, basketball, football and softball.
Today, the program is run by Gerald's son, Greece Police Chief Patrick Phelan.
Chief Phelan has been with the Greece Police Department since 1989.
The program strives to teach children a new sport or can help them to become more proficient within a sport they currently participate in.
This is accomplished by using police officers within the department as instructors and mentors for the kids.
The program is intended to be more than simply learning about or playing a sport; it is about building good relationships with police officers in a positive environment and promoting healthy youth activities.
The program is free of charge and remains the only completely free PAL program within the state.
