THE PEOPLE’S GARDEN INITIATIVE is an effort by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) which challenges its employees to establish People’s Gardens at USDA facilities worldwide or help communities create gardens.
People’s Gardens vary in size and type, but all have a common purpose – to help the community and the environment.

Fresh fruits and vegetables can be grown for those in need; or trees, shrubs and flowers planted to improve soil, water and air health, attract wildlife, or beautify the neighborhood.

The Grant USDA Service Center People’s Garden project is to help families, individuals, and children plant, harvest, share, and learn.
Two years ago, the USDA Service Center was approached by Grant United Methodist Pastor, Nora Mendyk.
She worked with the Service Center employees and obtained a grant from the United Methodist Church.
This grant money assisted in expanding the garden, paying for supplies to landscape walkways, and also paid for the plants that participants planted in the garden.
Last year, the Perkins County Community Foundation Fund approved an additional grant for the Methodist Church to continue its efforts in enhancing and promoting the People’s garden.
This grant money assists in providing participants with plants/seeds for growing and caring for in the garden.
The garden plots are watered by USDA employees.
The participants sign contracts to plant, weed, harvest, and share their produce.
Nothing is wasted.
The produce from the Day Care plot is harvested by the children and taken back to the Daycare for the children to eat.
Any leftover produce is taken to the Senior Center for the community to enjoy.
