Cecil Ingram Connor III was born in Winter Haven, Florida in 1946, the descendant of a citrus magnate; he grew up in Waycross, Georgia.
He imbibed music with passion from a young age, studying piano and guitar, and adored country artists like the Louvin Brothers as well as the early rock and soul dominating pop radio.
At age 10 he saw Elvis Presley in concert, introduced himself to the King, snagged an autograph, and subsequently set about his own rock ‘n’ roll self-mythologizing by penning a tune called “Gram’s Boogie.” .

Such exuberance however, was tempered by tragedy: Gram’s father committed suicide when the boy was just 11.
His mother, Avis, took Gram and his little sister on a trip to New York and then moved with them back to Winter Haven, where she remarried Bob Parsons, who would bestow his surname on the kids.

As a teen, he played in guitar-driven rock acts like The Pacers and The Legends, and then segued to folk with The Village Vanguards and The Shilos; the latter combo found its way to New York City and plied its rootsy trade at coffeehouses and hootenannies.
But Parsons suffered another huge loss at age 18, when his mother died of cirrhosis the very day he graduated from high school.
Bob Parsons married the family’s babysitter, sent Gram’s little sister to boarding school and did his best to appropriate the family fortune..

The fledgling musician was admitted to Harvard, but invested little energy in his academic pursuits – his true education came in the clubs of Boston, where he played with a band called The Like and immersed himself in modern country music.
Fueled by the work of latter-day American greats like Merle Haggard and George Jones, Parsons found his focus.
Mixing twangy tunes and Memphis soul, the core of the group morphed into The International Submarine Band; Parsons’ songs, though not as refined as they would become, bear his unmistakable stylistic signature: stately, soulful, with a playfully ironic nod to “traditional values.” .

Parsons dropped out of college and moved to New York with the ISB.
There they enjoyed greater visibility, released a single and recorded the theme song for the film The Russians Are Coming! But Los Angeles began to seem a more natural home for their Western sound, so they relocated once again – landing a performance sequence in Roger Corman’s LSD movie The Trip and inking a deal with producer Lee Hazlewood’s LIH Records.
But soon most of the band’s members left; Parsons and guitarist John Nuese were the sole remaining members, while their ex-bandmates began playing out under a new moniker: The Flying Burrito Bros.
Joined by studio cats like Glen Campbell, Parsons and Nuese recorded the album Safe at Home for LIH; the 1968 disc was among the very earliest to blend country and rock.

Without a full band, however, the ISB was more of an idea than a going concern – and Parsons, also burdened with personal problems, felt adrift.
Salvation, of a sort, came when Roger McGuinn of The Byrds invited him to join the band.
David Crosby had just left, and Parsons agreed to step in as pianist.
But his role was far greater than that.
Though he appeared on just one Byrds studio album, 1968’s Sweetheart of the Rodeo, the Nashville-recorded set took the group in an entirely new direction.
Parsons’ songs, notably the incandescent “Hickory Wind,” blew his bandmates’ minds.
Thanks to the direction he provided, The Byrds became the first rock band to play the Grand Ole Opry..

He left the band almost as abruptly as he joined it, refusing to travel with them to a concert in South Africa on ostensibly political grounds.

By this time he’d formed a friendship with Keith Richards of the Rolling Stones, and the two spent countless hours listening to classic albums, playing and drinking.
“We both loved that melancholy, high-lonesome s---,” Richards recalled in a 2004 Rolling Stone essay (part of the artist-on-artist series “The Immortals”).
“We were always looking for the next heart-tugger, looking to pull that extra heartstring.” Parsons’ influence on Richards, and by extension on the entire creative process of the Stones, was profound; country melodies and instrumentation became increasingly prominent in their late ’60s and early ’70s work, coinciding with the band’s creative peak..

Parsons’ own creative peak was just beginning when he formed The Flying Burrito Bros.

Along with bassist Chris Ethridge, pedal-steel wizard “Sneeky” Pete Kleinow, they formulated the group’s sonic formula: classic country melodies punctuated with bursts of psychedelic fuzz, and delivered with hip, contemporary sensibility.

Parsons conducted his bandmates to his San Fernando Valley home-away-from-home, Nudie’s Rodeo Tailors, and for once made use of his family fortune, outfitting them in flamboyant cowboy suits by the great Nudie Cohen, the Ukrainian threadmeister who’d first put Elvis in gold lamé.
Parsons famously sported a Nudie suit emblazoned with pot leaves, pills and naked women, with a shining cross on the back; thus did the attitude of the FBB contrast ironically with cautionary songs about towns full of sin..

Having signed with A&M Records, the Burritos released their debut disc, The Gilded Palace of Sin, in 1969.
The music didn’t fit into any radio format – it was too country for rock stations, and too far out for country – but history would recognize the band’s dramatic influence and brilliant material.
Parsons, however, spent more time hanging out with the Stones than with his own band, and the lure of the various “sins” alluded to in Burritos songs proved irresistible.
His participation in the band’s follow-up disc, Burrito Deluxe, was minimal compared to Palace, but he did contribute a couple of fine originals and some exquisite vocals..

After a long period of wandering, Parsons decided to find a female voice to pair with his own.
He found the ideal duet partner in Emmylou Harris, a young troubadour blessed with an exceptionally pure, angelic tone.
She loomed so large on his “solo” albums, in fact, that they could almost be called “duo albums;” GP, released on the Reprise label in 1972, finds their voices soaring together on originals and covers alike.

The pair, joined by Parsons’ Fallen Angels band, hit the road for a rambunctious series of shows in 1973, and afterward repaired to the studio to work on Gram’s next record, Grievous Angel.
Once it was completed, Parsons headed for Joshua Tree, the California desert retreat where he’d blown off a fair share of steam, and there – at the Joshua Tree Inn – he died from a fatal mixture of heroin and tequila.
Road manager Phil Kaufman gave him a Viking send-off at Joshua Tree, true to the singer’s wishes..

Over the ensuing decades, however, Parsons’ reputation as a musical trailblazer has grown by leaps and bounds.
Country and rock began to commingle successfully in the 70s, as acts like The Eagles and Poco built on the foundation of his work; the “y’alternative” movement of the ’90s and beyond, meanwhile, owes an incalculable debt to his artist explorations.
1999 saw the release of Return of the Grevious Angel, a tribute album featuring Harris and an array of guest artists, including Sheryl Crow; Wilco; Beck; Whiskeytown (fronted by Ryan Adams); Elvis Costello; The Pretenders; Lucinda Williams and David Crosby; Hillman with Steve Earle: and several other high-profile acts.
Rhino has issued definitive compilations of Parsons’ music, notably the double-disc Gram Parsons Anthology.
