UA, Silver,Miss Me, Quicksilver, Fox, Columbia, Sketchers;)) Ten Years ago, Todd and Julie Mears took a big leap of faith and purchased a small-town clothing store.
.
.
This Week, they're doing it again.
.
.
On Friday, May 6, at 9 a.m., the Mears will open The Golden Rule in Bottineau.
The business is located at 502 Main Street, the former Four Season's Department Store, which closed in February..
"We hope to be another store that attracts people to downtown Bottineau," Todd said.
"By offering popular, name-brand clothing and providing outstanding customer service, we are confident we can do just that.".
.
The Mears purchased The Golden Rule in Rolla in July 2001 from Ron and Frieda Hasen.
The popular clothing and shoe store continued to thrive and grow under their ownership..
.
Todd said just two years after buying the Rolla store, Julie came to him with a concept.
" She brought the idea to me of opening a store in Bottineau," Todd said.
"But we were still rather new to owning a small business and we were expecting out first child in August (2003), so we decided to put the idea on the back burner for a while.
We had a second child in 2004 and a third in 2009 so the idea wasn't really given any serious consideration.".
.
That was the case until April of last year when Mears' phone rang.
On the other end of the line was Jim Chandler, owner of the Four Season's Department Store.
.
.
"He asked if we would be interested in buying his building because he was nearing retirement age and wanted to scale back to just running his other store in Crookston, Minnesota," Todd Said..
.
With three kids and the support of extended family member, Todd and Julie decieded it was now or never.
.
"The timing of this opportunity just seemed to be right," Julie said.
.
"We Felt if we didn't investigate it further, we never would." .
.
Discussions with Chandler led the Mears to a few extended trips to Bottineau, where they soaked in the nuances of the Four Season's store as well as the business community as a whole.
.
.
Todd Said the eventual decision to open a business in Bottineau was whole-hearted..
.
"If we were going to take on another store operation, we wanted to make sure we could be 100 percent committed to the idea, not only for ourselces, but for the people of the Bottineau and the surrounding area," Todd said.
.
.
Julie added, "It never crossed our minds to buy the store and try things out for a year or two, and if it didn't work out, we would sell the building and go back to just running our store in Rolla.
By purchasing the building and doing the remodeling to the extent we did, I think people will see we are in this for the long term." .
.
The remodeling project has occupied much of the Mears' time in recent months.
What was originally planned as a touch-up with new paint and carpet quickly turned into a massive overhaul..
.
It also stands as a fitting example of the Mears' investment in the community..
.
"We basically went in and gutted the entire first floor, re-insulated the walls and ceilings, painted the walls, put in new capet and lighting, replaced the old store front single-pane windows with new new themal pane windows and replaced the previous heating and cooling system with a new energy-efficient electrical system," Todd said..
.
The work to the building had garnered much attention during the past several weeks..
.
"People that have stopped by the store in the last wek or so have commented that they can't believe it's the same building," Julie said."To say we are happy with how the project has turned out would be a huge understatment.".
.
Some new faces wil lalso be a part of the business.
Along with Todd and Julie, Ross Sivertson will play a part at the Golden Rule in Bottineau.
Sivertson has worked at the Rolla store for 27 years.
.
Other staff members at the Bottineau stoew will be Cydny Espe, Lindsay Hallada, Audrey Ihla, Liz NaDeau and Alison McWhinney.
.
.
As for the Mears, their roots run deep in the retail industry.
.
Before moving to Rolla, Todd and Julie gained valuable retail experience from companies know for bothe quality products and outstanding customer service.
.
Todd worked at Lands' End, a catalog clothing company based in Dodgeville, Widconsin.
Julie also worked at Lands' End as well as Williams-Sonoma, a top-quality kitchen and tableware company based out of Sonma, California..
Todd said the chance to run their own business and be near family was what pulled them back to North Dakota.
.
"We were completely happy with our jobs and life in Wisconsin but the opportunity to run our own business was exciting," said Todd who was born and raised in Rolla.
Julie is originally from Wast Lansing, Michigan.
.
Now, the Mears will be running two businesses and are ready to put their rime-tested tactices of customer service and quality products to work in Bottineau.
.
.
That, however, isn't the only exciting prospect for the couple.
.
"what we are really forward to is the first day we open for business," Julie said.
"We can't wait to see the expressions on our customers' faces after they walk in the front doors for the first time.
Hopefully, they will be as excited as we are with the look of the store..
