Die Geographie ist eine der ältesten an der RWTH Aachen vertretenen Disziplinen.
Ab 1907 existierte an der RWTH Aachen eine Dozentur für Geographie, welche damals noch der "Fakultät für Allgemeine Wissenschaft" zugeordnet war.
Wie an vielen anderen deutschen Universitätsstandorten kam es 1942 zu einer Einstellung des Lehrbetriebes..

Im Jahre 1954 wurde das Geographische Institut mit einer außerordentlichen Professur, übernommen von Prof.
Dr.
Felix Monheim, neugegründet.
Die Geographie wurde 1965 in die "Philosophische Fakultät" integriert.
In den Jahren bis 1974 erfolgte ein stetiger personeller Ausbau des Istitutes und auch die Zahl der Studierenden stieg stetig an.
Im Jahre 2002 erfolgte der Wechsel der Geographie in den Fachbereich 5 (Georessourcen und Materilatechnik)..

Drei Jahre später wurde erstmals zum WS 2005/2006 der Bachelor of Science Angewandte Geographie (FB 5) und der Zweifach-Bachelor of Arts Geographie eingeführt und schließlich zum WS 2008/2009 auch der Master of Scinece Angewandte Geographie sowie der Master of Science Wirtschaftsgeographie.
Seit dem WS 2005/2006 ist das Studium der Geographie an der RWTH Aachen aufgrund der hohen Nachfrage zulassungsbeschränkt..
