Die Häftlinge waren wenige Tage zuvor in Todesmärschen aus einem Außenlager des KZ Neuengamme in Hannover und aus mehreren Außenlagern des KZ Mittelbau-Dora im Harz in Gardelegen angekommen.
Nur wenige überlebten das Massaker.
