Friends Of Native Arts: The Douglas Society

100 W 14th Ave Pkwy

Denver,

Colorado,United-states - 80204

Detailed description is 'Friends of Native Arts: The Douglas Society' is the support group for the Denver Art Museum covering American Indian art, African art, and Oceanic art.
Frederic Huntington Douglas was one of the first scholars to recognize the artistic achievements of American Indians as well as the arts of Africa and Oceania.
From 1929 to 1956, as the Denver Art Museum's Curator of Native Arts, he began acquiring the objects that form the core of what is now recognized throughout the world as one of the most important collections of native arts.
In 1974 the "The Douglas Society" was founded to honor and ensure the continuance of the work of Frederic Douglas.
.
.
In January 2015 at our Annual Meeting the name was changed to "Friends of Native Arts: The Douglas Society" by a unanimous vote of the quorum of members present.
.
.
It was very important to us to maintain “The Douglas Society” in our name so we could honor the important connection to our past, and with the addition of “Native Arts” to the name we will now have instant association of what the support group is all about.
This will be a key element in marketing the group both inside and outside of the museum and will hopefully help us in our drive to attract new members.
.
.
Every year in January we hold our annual meeting and dinner which also includes entertainment of some variety.
During the year we bring in speakers from all around the country to present interesting and diverse programs to our members and guests.
We generally have 4 programs in the spring and 4 programs in the fall/winter, with at least one event being a social event.
.
.
We help to support new acquisitions for the Native Arts Department and also help to support various local activities focusing on Native arts.
