Detailed description is Support the only public greenspace between TSU campus and Downtown Kirksville The last public green area is in danger of being paved over and turned into a parking lot.
Today this green space is raidly becoming the only communal parkland in the greater downtown Kirksville area.
As the homes from the 1890-1940 period are being torn down for commercial or apartment tenements their lawns, trees, and landscaping are disappearing.
The area is suffering from water drainage issues from this as well.
Lot sized buildings and the paving from corner to corner are collecting rainwater and snowfall and discharging it into an over burdened storm system.
Without grass space and trees to allow for evaporation, what water that does percolate into the soil becomes trapped between a clay substrata and the paved over surface creating maintenance issues for foundations, streets and sidewalks paving..

Looking at the City of Kirksville’s Municipal Downtown Improvement Plan December 1999, the city government has long recognized the need for green space buffering and the addition of parkway landscaping and usage.
