Detailed description is Dedicated to the 1st bronze statue for Francis Pegahmagabow, First Nations hero of WW I, later Chief of Wasauksing First Nation.
Location: Parry Sound In 2016, it will be a century since one of Canada’s greatest war heroes, Francis Pegahmagabow, received the Military Medal.
The citation speaks of his great bravery, disregard for danger, and faithfulness to duty.
Similar acts of exceptional valour were recognized by adding bars to the medal; Pegahmagabow was one of only 39 members of the Canadian Expeditionary Force to receive two bars to his Military Medal.
To this day, no other aboriginal soldier has earned as many battle awards..
.
A skilled sniper and scout, he fought overseas for almost the entire Great War, seeing action in some of its most horrific battles: Second Battle of Ypres.
The Somme, where he was wounded.
Passchendaele.
The Battle of the Scarpe.
.
.
Respected at war, he returned to a life of poverty, and the suffocating power of the Department of Indian Affairs and its agents.
Fueled by pride in his Great War accomplishments, and changed in ways that only returning veterans could understand, Pegahmagabow persistently rebelled against barriers and racism, agitating for change.
He served as Chief of the Parry Island Band (Wasauksing First Nation), band councillor, and as Supreme Chief of the National Indian Government.
.
.
Brave in war, brave in peace.
