Desde sus inicios en 1982, este espacio teatral fue conocido como Foro de la Compañía Shakespeare o Foro Shakespeare.
Fue el productor y empresario Héctor Fuentes quien conjuntamente con los integrantes del Foro Independiente de Actividades Creativas, A.C.
(FIACRE), fundan la librería especializada en teatro llamada La compañía Shakespeare, inaugurada por los dramaturgos Sergio Magaña y Víctor Hugo Rascón Banda ese mismo año..
Existía ya la necesidad de tener un foro alternativo a los espacios teatrales de tipo comercial y subvencionado así que en 1983, a partir de la reconstrucción en lo que eran las casas adyacentes a la librería original, logra inaugurarse este espacio con una serie de lecturas dramatizadas..

La primera de ellas fue Voces en el umbral, a cargo de Víctor Hugo Rascón Banda.
Con el objetivo de obtener un mejor aprovechamiento de los espacios, en este mismo año, el foro fue objeto de una remodelación que lo convirtió en el espacio multimodal que lo caracteriza.

Su reinauguración fue en enero de 1990 con el montaje de la obra La señora Klein, de Nicholas Wright, con las actuaciones de Ana Ofelia Murguía, Delia Casanova y Margarita Sanz, bajo la dirección del maestro Ludwik Margules y con escenografía de Carlos Trejo..
