Detailed description is This page is dedicated to my chicken keeping adventures.
I have had a small flock of four once upon a time, but have since moved and am now ready to get back to keeping and caring for my pet chickens and invite you along for the ride! What can I say? I’ve been bitten by the Crazy Chicken Lady Bug.
I was completely blind-sided as I had only heard of things like this happening to other people when they are engulfed by an activity of which they seem to live their lives for..
If I had to pin point where I think it all started, it would have been when my husband and I stopped into a farm n’ feed store.
It was one of those rare days when we were childless for the day, as our boys were at daycare and we had the day to ourselves.
We had no farm animals at the time.
Only a burning desire to “someday” be homesteaders which we still hold in our “someday” dreams.
This was one of those “let’s just drop in and see” types of excursions.
When we walked through the door, the first thing to greet us was the cutest little 4-6 bird coop with one little hen clucking away her greetings (or frustrations) to incoming customers.
And that’s all it took.
That was the spark that lit the flame.
I fell in love with how cute and small the coop was.
Was this really all I needed in order to house and keep chickens?? How simple! (pfft…).
I went home that night and started researching.
What to feed them, how to house them, how important water is, free ranging, oyster shells, dust baths, different breeds, layers vs meat birds, what’s the difference between a pullet and a chook, or rooster or hen?? The list and info out there (the good and the bad) just kept coming.
Little did I know, I knew nothing other than the fact that you do not need a rooster to get eggs.
Yay me!! ☺.
I regurgitated all of my new found knowledge to my husband who listened and nodded while I chattered away as he too liked the idea of someday having chickens.
I should have figured that while his interest in chickens was positive, his telling me the reasons why we shouldn’t or wouldn’t have chickens in our current home, meant he had something up his sleeve.
At the time all it meant to me was that I would need to try harder to convince him he needed chickens in his life now, not later.
Oh how I love a challenge!.
Time passed and I continued to research anything and everything chicken related.
I consumed the info almost as fast as I could find it.
Along the way, I began to detect inconsistencies in what info I was receiving.
Diatomaceous Earth, anyone? I mean, just researching WHAT this stuff is was enough for me to conclude that this was NOT something I was willing to introduce into the caring of my future flock.

My research lead me to a lady by the name of Kathy Shea Mormino.
This lady is a chicken keeping super star.
I like her fact based, no-nonsense approach to chicken keeping.
This lady has done her research beyond scouring the internet.
She has talked to poultry experts, veterinarians, scientists, you name it along with her own trial and errors.
This lady is my go to source for chicken advice and information.
Anything I apply to my chickens, most likely came from this lady.
Her coops are beautiful, her chickens are the healthiest and happiest I’ve ever seen and when her flock is affected by illness or loss, I can’t help but feel connected to the event.
She is an inspiration to me and I hope to someday have the ability so showcase my own chicken keeping adventures and offer advice and info to others as she does.
But I digress, on with my chicken story..
A few days before my birthday I pulled in to our driveway after returning home from work a bit early.
As I approached the open garage door I noticed my husband tinkering around and a big wide box leaning up against the wall.
I got out of the car and walked over to where he stood and saw the words “Chicken Coop” printed on the side of the box.
I couldn’t believe my eyes! I looked at my husband and back at the box then back to my husband with tears welling up in my eyes, trying to hide that fact that a chicken coop has brought me to tears.
This was by far one of the most thoughtful gifts I had ever received, and the spark that had lit my chicken loving fire.
