Flood / Water Damaged Vehicles - FYI

405 springdale avenue

Montgomery,

Pennsylvania,United-states - 19040

Detailed description is Everything you need to know about buying, owning and selling a flood / water damaged vehicle.
For over 20 years P&H Motors has been buying repairing and selling flood and water damaged vehicles.
I will be sharing my personal experience on what to look for when buying, repairing, and selling a flood or water damaged vehicle..
.
First.
We need to determine the level of water damage.
Not all flood vehicles are found floating in a river.
I will put each vehicle in to a category from 1 to 10.
1 being the least damage - 10 the most severe..
.
Level 1.
The least damaged of all the flood vehicles.
These vehicles would be anything with no water entering the vehicle.
Parked or stationary cars and trucks that had water up to the lower rockers with no water intrusion.
Damage can still occur when water levels reach the bottom of the car.
Many starter motors are located low on the engine and can be damaged or seized from water intrusion and corrosion.
Also these starters typically have a heavy gauge power wire running directly to the starter motor.
Salt or brackish flood water can completely corrode this wire to the point of it becoming disconnected from the starter.
The next thing to inspect would be the wheel bearings, brake calipers (stuck or seized pistons), rear brake drums if equipped.
Older and higher mileage vehicles are more prone to damage in these locations due to leaky or worn seals and o rings.
These areas may also not show any problems until several hundreds or thousands of miles..
.
Level 2.
Water damage, not flood related.
There are several ways water can enter a vehicle other than flooding.
Open window or sunroof, Plugged or clogged drain lines inside the sunroof track.
Bad weatherstripping on door and trunk seals.
Clogged air conditioner humidity drain, and a leaking windshield, rear window or corner glass.
Depending on the location of the leak determines the severity of the damage.
Clogged sunroof drains can spill over into the headliner and destroy the fabric leaving stains and possible mold.
Water will typically flow down the a,b, or c pillars and puddle under the rear seat, trunk, and or floor.
Unless the carpet is removed, cleaned, dried and the leak repaired, it will almost never dry on its own.
Making it a breeding ground for mold and mildew.
Open sunroofs can allow rain water to effect center console switches, shifters, sensors, and modules.
Open side windows can also destroy power window / lock switches and door modules.
Class 2 vehicles are typically easy to repair and require only replacing switches, sensors, or modules that have been effected..
.
Level 3.
Flood waters over the rocker panels but below the bottom of the seat and kick panels.
I call these wet carpet floods.
These would be the most common flood vehicle that I purchase.
Almost any time water has entered a vehicle, most insurance companies will determine it a total loss.
The vehicle Make and model will determine the amount of work required to rebuild.
With this level of flood, you will still be able to start and drive the vehicle, but you may see dash lights in the cluster.
Airbag, ABS, traction control would be the most common.
Here is where things start to get more difficult.
The proper scan tool and experienced mechanic will be needed to determine exactly the cause of these warning lights.
Most vehicles but not all, have modules, sensors, and computers located on the floor and kick panels.
Some are water resistant, most are not.
The entire interior will have to be removed other than the dash, headliner, a,b, and c pillar panels (typically).
Many airbag modules are sealed from the elements but some times water does get in.
These modules can be found from donor vehicle from websites like ebay and www.car-part.com.
Make sure the airbag module was NEVER previously deployed.
Passenger seat modules and pressure sensors are also a common issue at this level.
If your seats are power...
motors and tracks can corrode and seize making it difficult to remove.
Replacement seats and tracks are easy to find and inexpensive on car-part.com.
ABS and traction control light at this level are usually a defective yaw rate sensor found low in the center console.
Refer to level 1 for other required repair work..
.
Level 4.
Water levels above the kick panel and to the top of the lower seat cushion and bottom of the center console.
This is where rewiring of the vehicle and module, computer replacement is most likely required.
At this level, depending on the salinity and length of time the vehicle has been under water, computers, modules, sensors, seats / seat tracks, seat belt retractors, and harness plugs will need to be replaced or repaired.
As the vehicles electronic components sit under water, electrolysis starts to decay anything with voltage running through it.
Many modules or sensor will have some level of voltage running to it, even with the ignition in the off position.
Wiring damage will be found anywhere there is a break in the seal of the wire.
Example - Harness plugs found in the kick panel, under carpet and seats, Connectors or plugs into sensors, modules and computers and even areas where a previous repair may have been performed ( test light probe into or through a single wire).
Repair process would begin by purchasing a donor module or computer that has the original harness plug (pig tail) with as much wire as possible still attached.
Depending on the amount of damage, you may be able to re pin the damaged wires or have to completely rewire the donor pigtail into the car.
Harness connectors can be completely cut off and the wires joined individually using waterproof butt connectors or soldering.
If the wire has been corroded, soldering may not work.
.
The next issue is under the hood.
Other than replacing the starter motor, you will need to look at the engine accessories.
Tensioner pulleys, idler pulleys, A/C compressor bearings, water pumps, power steering pumps, and Timing belt pulleys and tensioners will all have to be inspected.
Once the vehicle is started you will notice the sound of bad bearings on these accessories.
A loud wirling sound that can be tracked down using a mechanic stethoscope or long screwdriver pushed against your ear and the device you are testing.
.
If your vehicle has a manual transmission, the throwout bearing could likely be seized on the output slide shaft and the bearing ruined.
The transmission will have to be removed in order to replace this bearing..
At this level you will probably not have any water intrusion into the transmission, transfer case, or engine but inspect anyway.
If you have a rear differential water may be present.
Refer to Level 1 and 2 for other required repair work.
.
.
Level 5.
Water intrusion in the engine while driving resulting in a stall and no water entering the interior of the vehicle.
"DO NOT TRY TO RESTART THE VEHICLE" This is a common issue.
Obviously this only occurs while driving the vehicle through a large puddle or water crossing.
Also common with off-roaders.
Driving too fast through a large puddle or stream creates a snowplow effect to the water in front of the vehicle.
Depending on the speed and depth of the water you can see as much a a two feet increase in water depth difference between the front and rear of the vehicle.
Most vehicles engine air intake is located at about headlight level in the front of the engine where cold air is scavenged for better combustion and fuel efficiency.
Because of this, it is also perfectly located to suck in any water being compressed and pushed up to the top of the front of the vehicle.
Once water hits this point it is sucked into the engine combustion chamber where it can not be compressed.
The results can be as simple as the engine stalling out or as catastrophic as several rods breaking and pushing through the side of the engine block.
Engine rpms and the amount of water determine the amount of damage.
.
First thing to look for.
Look under the car for oil dripping from the splash panel or bottom of the engine oil pan.
If oil is found it's time for a new engine.
If no oil is found, It's time to remove all of the spark plugs and drain the engine oil.
Wwatch as the oil flows.
Water will flow first if the vehicle has been sitting for a while ...(IF) any has made it through to the oil pan.
Water and oil mix may also flow, this will look like a chocolate milkshake.
Remove the intake hose and airbox cover and make sure no more water is in the intake system.
Add new oil and filter and crank the motor over slowly.
click.
click.
click.
the key until the engine has turned over a few times.
now let it rip.
Water should shoot out through the open spark plug holes.
Use compressed air to further evacuate the combustion chamber.
I then use WD40 and spray it down into the open spark plug holes to better displace the existing water in the cylinders, and held lubricate the washed out cylinder walls.
Continue this cycle a few times before installing new plugs and attempting to start the vehicle.
You may have to repeat the process a few times before she will start.
It's all about luck at this point.
She may start and run perfectly.
I have had many cars fire right up and run as though nothing has happened.
but..
rods could be bent, pistons and rings cracked, exploded pistons etc.
we've seen it all.
