I 1894 ble det vedtatt å bygge Egersund – Flekkefjordbanen.
Utbyggingen startet i 1897, og banen ble åpnet i 1904 som en smalsporet jernbane.
Det tok syv år å bygge banen, og byggingen krevde syv liv..
.
I en periode var det treskinnespor på strekningen fra Flekkefjord til Tronvika.
Da kunne man kjøre smalsporete og normalsporete tog på banen.
Dette ble gjort for å kunne frakte utstyr til Sørlandsbanenprosjektet, fra Flekkefjord havn, og opp til Sørlandsbanen.
I 1944 ble banen bygget om til normalspor og knyttet opp til Sørlandsbanen ved Sira stasjon.
Samtidig ble strekningen Sirnes til Tronviken nedlagt.
Denne strekningen ble senere tatt i bruk som vei, og det er her dagens E39 går..
