At the time, he was looking to purchase a CNC router for some robotics projects he was build.
The products on the market at the time for the hobbyist weren't encouraging; commercial routers were and still are too expensive for a hobbyist and there was absolutely nothing available in the DIY market.
Nate realized a hobbyist router doesn't need fancy linear motion rails, precision ground ballscrews, and 1/10000 of an inch precision, just good solid components that work together.
His first machine worked surprisingly well and he decided to start selling parts and eventually kits to hobbyist that dreamed of CNC for an affordable price.
