A Federação Académica de Viseu (FAV) foi fundada em 12-12-1990, pelas Associações de Estudantes da Escola Superior de Tecnologia, da Escola Superior de Educação, da Escola Superior de Enfermagem e da Universidade Católica de Viseu.
Os dirigentes associativos que na altura lideravam o movimento associativo de Viseu, entenderam necessário criar uma instituição que traduzisse a união do ensino superior existente, que fosse capaz de defender os interesses comuns de todos os estudantes da região e que estabelecesse as bases para a congregação de uma Academia Una..

Actualmente a FAV representa a totalidade das Associações de Estudantes/Académicas do Ensino Superior do distrito de Viseu, a saber:.
