Andrew Carnegie offered the town $8,000 in 1904 to build a new library building, and a lot was chosen on East Park Place.
Ground was broken on May 21, 1906 and the new library was opened on March 18, 1908.
The Fair Haven Free Library is included in the Fair Haven Green Historic District..

In 1997 an 1,100 square foot one-story addition was constructed at the rear of the original building.
The addition provides the library with a new main entrance with stairs and a bandicap lift which allow access to the main level and the basement.
This addition provided a new children's area and circulation department on the main floor, as well as a barrier-free rest room at the basement level.

Phase Two of the addition project ended in 2003 with the completion of a basement meeting room.
On March 18, 2008 the meeting room was dedicated in memeory of Bill and Lucille Hyde.
