In January, 1866, a group of devout Christians decided to build a church.
Many of them and emigrated from Germany to the town of Tell City.
Some were born in the United States, and many were of German and Swiss Heritage..

There was no protestant church in Tell City and they had been walking to the town of Cannelton, three miles away, to worship at St.
John's.
Six years after the first settlers came from Cincinnati in 1858 to start Tell City, they built a church..

Meeting in homes, they adopted a church constitution and elected the first church council.
For the sum of $75, lot 1 in block 95 at the corner of Tenth and Jefferson was purchased, and plans were made for a building.
It was to be 30' x 50' with two windows in front and three windows on each side.
The brick walls were 12" thick.

When the cornerstone was laid on August 25, 1867, the congregation of St.
John's, the mother church, was invited.
The building was dedicated June 7, 1868, and one week later the first confirmation service was held in the church.
A few months later, the first organ was installed at a cost of $200.

The first few year, the church was served by pastors from the Cannelton church.
In 1877, a resident pastor was called and was paid an annual salary of $400.
The German language was used in worship until 1899, when English was introduced in the Sunday school and evening services..

In 1906, the original building was sold and moved to another location so a newer, larger building could be erected on the church property.
That building was dedicated July 4, 1907.
Its total cost was $18,000 and the sanctuary could seat 400 worshippers.

Other building programs enlarged the Christian Education Department in 1924 and in 1968.
Fellowship Hall was added to the north side of the church in 1961, and the sanctuary was completely rebuilt in 1968..

Tell City experienced the worst flooding of the Ohio River in 1937.
Hundreds of homes and businesses had to be evacuated and the church opened its doors to families whose homes were flooded.
The Sunday school rooms became sleeping quarters for more than 40 people.
The church kitchen was used to prepare meals for almost 600 people each day.
The women of the church worked tirelessly to cook and serve meals and to distribute clothing and bedding to the homeless.
