Estate Little Princess Archaeological Field School

St-croix,

Vi,Us-virgin-islands - 00820

Detailed description is Through archaeological methods, this project identifies material cultural that will provide information on human lifeways in St.
Croix.
As an archaeological field school, it serves as an excellent learning tool for university students and Crucian youth.
In 2014, representatives of Diving with a Purpose (DWP) contacted founding members of the Society of Black Archaeologists (SBA) Justin Dunnavant and Ayana Flewellen about a possible collaboration as part of the Slave Wrecks Project (SWP).
The SWP is an underwater archaeology project administered by George Washington University and the Smithsonian Institute to document the location and condition of wrecked ocean-going vessels used in the Atlantic Slave Trade.
National Park Service (NPS) underwater archaeologists and divers from DWP, a community-focused nonprofit organization dedicated to the conservation and protection of submerged heritage resources, have been tasked with the job of executing the underwater archaeological survey and capacity building component of the SWP.
In addition to conducting underwater archaeology, DWP furthers the cause of submerged heritage conservation by providing education, training, certification and field experience to adults and youth in the fields of maritime archaeology and ocean conservation.
Building capacity among underrepresented groups is another goal of the DWP, which is why members of the SBA have been asked to participate in this unique collaboration..
.
Launched in 2011, the SBA was established to create a space where archaeologists of African descent could collaborate, to work towards the conservation of heritage properties associated with people of African descent, and to build heritage conservation capacity among members of the African diaspora.
Part of this mission includes public outreach and education.
As participating members of the SWP, members of the SBA bring their experience with African diaspora archaeology and public archaeology to the project..
.
Administered by the Nature Conservancy, the Estate Little Princess Plantation includes 25 acres of land about 1.75 miles east of Christiansted, St.
Croix.
Virgin Islands.
Little Princess was created in 1749 as a Danish sugar plantation and rum distillery.
Historical documents state that a hospital was located on site by 1815.
The architectural remains of this property were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 (Wright et al.
1980).
Today, the plantation property is maintained as a nature reserve.
Ongoing efforts to rehabilitate the main house and other buildings are conducted by The Nature Conservancy in order to preserve valuable heritage resources and emphasize sustainable historic preservation (The Nature Conservancy 2017)..
.
The field school will be administered by SBA members who will execute and manage the terrestrial component.
Members of all participating organizations have been tasked with reporting the project’s results.
This entire project has been named “The Estate Little Princess Archaeological Field School.”.
.
Crucian heritage includes the contributions of individuals from diverse racial and ethnic backgrounds, during both the pre-Columbian and contemporary historical periods.
Previously identified archaeological sites demonstrate that St.
Croix has a rich history spanning more than 3000 years.
Despite the fact that Danish colonial activities have formed the core of heritage conservation efforts at the Little Princess Plantation, enslaved Africans, Crucians of African descent, and Native Americans have all played an essential role in the archaeological history of this site.
The Little Princess Archaeology Field School will contribute to documenting the important contributions this place made to the development of present-day Crucian society..
.
The terrestrial archaeology component will use systematic geophysical survey and archaeological excavations to identify archaeological materials that will provide information on human lifeways in St.
Croix.
As an archaeological field school, it will also be an excellent learning tool for university students and Crucian youth.
Prehistoric and historic archaeological research throughout the Caribbean islands has revealed a complex relationship between Native Americans and persons of European and/or African descent.
Although that is not an anticipated outcome of this field school research, the transition from prehistoric populations to those of the historic period is certainly one of academic interest, and in this regard, archaeology can provide information that is not found in either documents or oral history..
.
One objective of the joint underwater and terrestrial archaeology field school on the island of St.
Croix is to focus on including Crucian youth, university students and local community members as part of an educational outreach program.
The overall goal of the field school, both terrestrial and underwater, is to engage the island-wide community in cultural heritage awareness and preservation.
Regarding community engagement, the field school objectives are to:.
.
1. Build community cultural heritage awareness;.
2. Build and increase the local capacity to assist in preserving cultural heritage resource assets;.
3. Engage the island-wide community in preservation efforts;.
4. Increase the local capacity to document cultural heritage resources; and.
5. Present various employment opportunities in scuba diving, archaeology, cultural heritage management, and tourism, affiliated with local dive shops, the National Park Service, the local VI Government, and the University of the Virgin Islands, among others..
.
This will be conducted through:.
• A one-week archaeological field school;.
• A one-week underwater archaeological field school;.
• A public archaeology component that will allow visitors and volunteers to experience archaeological fieldwork in real-time, and;.
• A comprehensive analysis and reporting of all project findings that will meet the standards of the Virgin Islands State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)..
