Desde que foi inaugurado em 26 de janeiro de 1957, o Planetário Municipal de São Paulo atraiu um grande número de interessados em Astronomia.
Naquela ocasião, o Planetário era operado pela Associação de Amadores de Astronomia de São Paulo - AAA - (desativada em 1965) que, desde 1949 quando foi fundada, ministrava cursos e palestras sobre a ciência dos astros..

O interesse crescente aliado ao espaço limitado que o edifício do Planetário dispunha para a realização de cursos que pudessem atender a grande procura, motivou a direção da instituição a promover contatos com a administração superior da Prefeitura de São Paulo, a fim de que suas instalações fossem ampliadas para que cursos, palestras, reuniões etc, pudessem ser realizados em espaço próprio e mais adequado..

Nessa época (1959) já estavam em funcionamento dois radiotelescópios pertencentes ao CRAAM (Centro de Radioastronomia e Astrofísica do Mackenzie) e ao departamento de Radioastronomia da AAA e instalados na área contígua ao Planetário - onde hoje se localiza a grande rosa-dos-ventos, no lado oeste da EMA, junto ao lago, sem dispor de instalações apropriadas para abrigar instrumentos e o pessoal técnico..

No final da década de 50 iniciou-se a construção de um edifício escolar, ao lado do Planetário Municipal, com a finalidade específica de promover o ensino, a divulgação e a difusão da Astronomia..

Em 25 de janeiro de 1961 foi inaugurada a Escola Municipal de Astrofísica (EMA) - a primeira e, até o presente, a única em seu gênero em nosso país e em toda a América Latina..
