D.J. attended Brother Martin High School in New Orleans. However, after Hurricane Katrina, D.J. was forced to play his senior year at Hightower High School in Missouri, Texas. At Hightower, D.J. led the Hurricane to a 26-4 record and all the way to the state quarterfinals. After the season, D.J. was named to the McDonald’s All American Team. With a number of scholarship opportunities available, DJ elected to attend the University of Texas.
During his freshmen season at Texas, D.J. emerged as one of the premier point guards in the nation. While starting all 35 games or the Longhorns, D.J. averaged 14.4 points and 6.7 assists per game. D.J.’s great play got him honors as All-Big 12 Second Team and All-Big 12 Rookie Team. A pass first point guard with tremendous vision, D.J. was complemented by former teammate and NBA Rookie of the Year Kevin Durant who said, “I don’t think I would be where I am today without D.J.”
After Durant left for the pros, D.J. assumed a much larger role in the offense. His sophomore year, D.J. averaged 19.2 points and 5.8 assists per game leading the Longhorns to an NCAA Tournament berth. His success led him to fore go his college eligibility and enter the NBA Draft where he was drafted 9th by the Charlotte Bobcats.
D.J. is not only talented on the court but also in the classroom. In the 2007 Fall Semester, D.J. earned a 4.0 GPA raising his cumulative average to 3.64. His academic and athletic success earned him honors as a first team Academic All-American.
Off the court, D.J. has a very close relationship with his family. The bond between him and his parents has allowed him to excel through his basketball career. Not only does his pre-game ritual include scouting his opponent, but also talking to his family for love and support. The tight bond between him and his family creates a loving atmosphere that will lead him to a prosperous career.
