DIAMOND J NATURAL HORSE TRAINING is dedicated and passionate about training your horse the ‘correct way’, starting with a strong foundation of groundwork.
Groundwork is the corner stone of your horse’s training.
It’s where you can gain your horse’s respect, ultimate control, and create the perfect bond between you and your horse.
Once there is a good foundation, then your horse will be started under saddle and will learn, to be soft and supple, responsive to the lightest cues, willing and fun to ride.

GROUNDWORK.

I think of training a horse like building a house.
You start building the foundation, then build from there.
If you have a weak foundation, you won’t have a stable house and will come across problems down the road.
I think that’s true to training a horse as well.
If you have a weak foundation in your horse’s training, you’re going to come across problems down the road.
This will set back your horse’s training, you won’t be getting the results you are wanting, and you won’t be able to reach your goals with your horse.
My goal in each horse I train is to get the best of both worlds.
One that is sensitive and will move its feet when I ask it to, and one that is desensitized and will relax when I want it to.
You don’t want a horse over sensitive, for then it will always be wound and won’t settle down.
Yeah, it’ll move its feet and do awesome things, but when you want it to relax, it won’t.
If you only desensitize your horse, it will become pushy and disrespectful.
Yeah, a bomb could go off right next to it and it will just stand there with a hind leg cocked, and flick cigarette butts at you..
You want to have a balance of each.
You want to have your horse move his feet when asked and you want your horse to relax when you want it to.
I want my horses to have a “yes ma’am” attitude.
You don’t have to beat a horse to accomplish this, you just have to apply the right amount of pressure to make them feel uncomfortable, let them figure out what you are asking, and then reward them when they give you the result you are looking for.
Now and then you do have to turn up the heat and apply more pressure to get the result you are looking for, but you don’t have to beat them into it.
Ask as gentle as possible, but as firm as necessary.
Horses don’t learn from pressure, they learn from the release of pressure.
Apply pressure when asking and release the pressure when they give you the correct response..
I’m very picky how I train horses.
I don’t hurry or rush them, and I don’t leave any exercises out.
I want to confront their issues up front and fix them straight away.
I don’t want those issues that I left earlier to come back when the horse is half way done with its training period.
I don’t want any holes in my horse’s training.
I do the best job that I can do with each horse and I don’t settle for less.

RIDING.

I like my horses to be feather light with the bit or even just a hackamore.
I want them to be responsive to the lightest cue and be tuned into me.
I don’t like riding a horse that is off in it own little world and when I pick up on the reins and are heavy because they weren’t tuned into me.
I want when I pick up to flex a horse, they snap their head around or when I pick up to stop them, they tuck their head in and stop with their hindquarters.
When I working them on the fence, I want them to suck back on their hindquarters and turn with the lightest amount of pressure.
When I’m riding them, I like them to be on a loose rein and content at the speed they are going, not wanting to slow down or speed up.
I want them to lope collected and not keep bouncing from a different gait to gait.
I want them nice and collected and smooth..
