From 1996 until 2009, he was Assistant Director for Research Support at Loyola University Chicago’s Cardinal Bernardin Cancer Center, providing assistance and support to physicians and laboratory researchers in identifying, obtaining and managing resources critical to the conduct of their work, including support in developing and managing multi-year budgets.
After working briefly at Northwestern University in 2009, he returned to Loyola and has been retired since late 2010.
From 1992-1996, he managed a research study investigating the causes of breast cancer at the University of Wisconsin’s Comprehensive Cancer Center..
His early career was in public health, working for the State of Wisconsin’s Division of Health in Madison from 1978–1992.
He began by directing a demonstration project in school-based child health screening, after which he worked as a budget and management analyst and as a program and management policy advisor.
Dennis also managed several State health programs, including the Adult Health Program, the Rural Mammography Program, the Chronic Disease Program, Refugee and Immigrant Health, and Disease Cluster Investigation.
While with the Division of Health, he served at various times with such bodies as the Division’s Affirmative Action/Civil Rights Compliance Committee, as Liaison between the Division and the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute, and as a member of the Association of State and Territorial Chronic Disease Program Directors..
Dennis believes in the value to the community of citizen engagement and volunteerism, and over the years he has committed himself to community service in a number of ways.
He has, at various times, served on the Boards of Directors of the International Breast Cancer Research Foundation, the Dane County (WI) Humane Society, the Southern Wisconsin Foodbank, and the Literacy Volunteers of Lake County (IL), as well as on the City of Madison (WI) Ethics Board.
Dennis is a volunteer with the Friends of the Warren-Newport Public Library in Gurnee and is a member of the Gurnee Rotary..
Dennis was born in 1950 in Beloit and grew up in various communities around Wisconsin.
As his father was occasionally on active military duty, Dennis also lived for short periods in Georgia while his father was at Fort Benning, and in Washington State while his father served at Fort Lewis.
As a teenager, he also lived for a time in West Africa while his father, who was also an educator, taught at a Nigerian college as part of a University of Wisconsin-Ford Foundation project.
During the family’s time abroad, Dennis attended secondary schools in Nigeria and Switzerland..
Dennis was Graduated with Distinction from the University of Wisconsin – Madison in Economics and Political Science.
He attended graduate school at the University of Wisconsin in Public Administration and at Loyola University Chicago in Theology.
