مركز توثيق التراث الحضاري والطبيعي هو أحد المراكز البحثية التابعة لقطاع البحث الأكاديمي بمكتبة الإسكندرية.
يقوم المركز منذ أكثر من خمسة عشر عاماً بإنشاء قواعد بيانات لتشمل المجالات المتنوعة لتراث مصر الضخم، ويقوم بجمع كميات هائلة من البيانات، وتطبيق وابتكار تكنولوجيا متقدمة، وتوظيف موارد بشرية مؤهلة.
تتسم قواعد بيانات المركز بتعدد اللغات، وتمثل مستودعاً ضخماً لمعلومات عن التراث، معززة بصور ثنائية وثلاثية الأبعاد ذات جودة عالية.
تُنشر هذه الثروة من المعرفة عبر قنوات مختلفة، منها نظام العرض التفاعلي البانورامي المسجل ببراءة اختراع، "بانوراما التراث"، وكتب وتطبيقات متعددة الوسائط وأفلام وثائقية ومواقع على شبكة الإنترنت وتقنيات الواقع الافتراضي والواقع المعزز وتطبيقات الهاتف المحمول وتطبيقات نظم المعلومات الجغرافية.
يشمل نطاق عمل المركز التراث المصري الحضاري والطبيعي، ويضم نوعي التراث الحضاري المادي والمعنوي على حد سواء.
وتُخصص مشاريع كثيرة للمركز لتوثيق التراث المادي، بدءاً من خريطة مصر الأثرية التي توظف الوسائط المتعددة مع تقنيات نظم المعلومات الجغرافية لتقديم توثيق فعال وأداة إدارة قوية للمواقع الأثرية المصرية القديمة.
ويشمل أيضاً معلومات عن آثار المتاحف التي تُعرض بمواقع على شبكة الإنترنت خاصة بالمركز، مثل موقع مصر الخالدة الحاصل على جائزة، وموقع المتحف المصري العالمي.
ويضم التراث المعنوي الفنون والفلكلور.
ويمتلك المركز مشاريع توثق هذه التنوعات التراثية حسب موقعها الجغرافي، مثل التراث النوبي والتراث السيوي.
وهناك مشاريع أخرى توثق جوانب مختلفة من الفنون، مثل مشروع نجوم الموسيقى في العالم العربي .
تزخر مصر بثروة عظيمة من التراث الطبيعي، تتمثل في تنوع هائل من الأصناف والأجناس.
ويمتلك المركز مشاريع عديدة توثق النباتات والحيوانات في مصر.
ويتعاون المركز حالياً مع وزارة الزراعة لتوثيق ثروة مصر من الحدائق النباتية، والمجموعات الخاصة بالمتحف الزراعي المصري القديم، وسلالات الخيول بمصر، فضلاً عن تحديث القدرات التكنولوجية للحدائق النباتية.
وتم إنشاء نظام معلومات جغرافية للحدائق .
لم تقتصر أعمال المركز على وضع خطط عمل لتوثيق التراث المصري إلكترونياً، بل اتسعت لتسهم في حماية كنوز تاريخ مصر العرضة للخطر والحفاظ عليها عبر توثيقها رقمياً.
تضم هذه الكنوز مخطوطات دار الوثائق القومية، وطوابع الهيئة القومية للبريد، ومحفوظات المكتب العربي.

شرع المركز مؤخراً في العمل في مجال التكنولوجيا من أجل المتاحف، وكيفية استخدام نماذج الواقع الافتراضي ضمن نظم عرض المتاحف.
وعرض المركز النموذج التجريبي الأول في معرض "مفاتيح روما"، الذي عقد في مكتبة الإسكندرية.

يحافظ المركز دائماً على إقامة تحالفات استراتيجية مع المنظمات الحكومية التالية: وزارة الاتصالات وتكنولوجيا المعلومات، وزارة الآثار، وزارة الثقافة، وزارة البيئة، وزارة الزراعة، بهدف توثيق الجوانب المتعددة للتراث المصري.
علاوة على ذلك، يقيم المركز شراكات مع منظمات محلية وإقليمية ودولية متعددة .
