WHAT IS PRO BONO?.

Pro Bono is a latin term describing work which is voluntary, gratuitous and aimed at fostering the common good.
Pro Bono activists help those who need legal advice which they cannot afford.

WHAT DO WE DO?.

Our work is broadly concerned with access to justice.
Our projects include:.

• FREE LEGAL ADVICE (FLA): FLA is run in collaboration with various Cambridge law firms, such as Mills and Reeve.
The different projects provide valuable exposure to the practicalities of being a lawyer.
A variety of different opportunities will be on offer, including sitting in on solicitors' client meetings and writing attendance notes, attending court duty sessions and collaborating with barristers, as well as mentoring opportunities with specialist lawyers.
Various practice areas will be represented, such as health, criminal, education and charity law.

• STREETLAW: Working in conjunction with the BPP Law School (Cambridge), groups of Cambridge students visit local schools and Jimmy's Night Shelter to present current legal topics.

• STUDENT ADVOCATES INTERNATIONAL (SAI): The SAI project works to organise overseas trips, as well as speaker events and workshops, to introduce students to human rights advocacy, promote access to justice and ensure that geographical and background factors do not inhibit the promulgation of the rule of law.

• AMICUS ALJ: Amicus ALJ is a legal charity based in the UK, supporting lawyers with clients on Death Row in the US.
With a strong focus on frontline assistance, such as preparing vital documentation for appeals, volunteers can directly contribute to the mission for better access to justice.
Throughout the year, there will be several opportunities for students to get involved in the charity’s valuable work, such as by fundraising, training and applying for internships.
There will also be an exciting event in late October, featuring speakers with extensive experience in US capital cases, and presenting more information about the charity’s work.

• SCHOOLS CONSENT PROJECT: This project is a lawyer-run initiative which visits schools to discuss the legal definition of ‘consent’ and key sexual offences with students aged 11-18.
We empower students to give, withdraw or withhold their consent, and call-out non-consensual sexual activity in others.
Alongside the legislative framework, we address victim impact, bystander intervention, appropriate responses to victim disclosure, ‘rape myths’, the age of consent, and legal and non-legal options for victims.
