In 1842, Gerry Bates staked claim to what we know now as the center of downtown Elmhurst.
He gave the settlement its first sense of community.
In 1843, he bought the building at the corner of St.
Charles Rd.
& Cottage Hill Ave, & named the structure Hill Cottage Tavern.
It served as a stage stop, an inn, & gathering place for residents & their families.
In 1845, the community was officially named Cottage Hill, after the tavern.
The Cottage Hill Station gradually became the most important stop along the route.
Providing easy access to Chicago for farmers, commodities, & more .
In 1869, the area was renamed Elmhurst because of the many Elm trees planted along the town’s streets.
