Detailed description is Programs Currently Offered by CMHA Mid Island:.

Balmoral Hotel - Low-Barrier Housing.
In October 2009, CMHA Mid Island purchased the Balmoral Hotel in Nanaimo to preserve the building as low-barrier, social housing.
A former bar/lounge on the site has been renovated to house HOST -- the Homeless Outreach and Support Team, which includes staff from CMHA, the Nanaimo Mental Health and Addictions team of VIHA and the Ministry of Housing and Social development.
The 19 units of the Balmoral are undergoing renovation.
People who work with HOST have preferential access to the units at the Balmoral.
CMHA Mid Island offices occupy the former manager's suite of the Balmoral.

Community Education.
We provide workshops and education in the community to bring issues around mental health and mental illness into the open.
Some activities include Depression Screening Day in October; Mental health Week activities in May; other workshops as requested in the community, a health resource centre at the Port Place mall.

Courtenay-Comox Services.

CMHA Mid-Island recently began offering services in the Courtenay Comox area after a merger with the former Courtenay Branch.

New Horizons: This is a 9 unit independent living apartment building.
A waiting list is in effect.

Peppermill: This is a frozen meal program and vocational training program for people with mental health and/or addictions issues that impact their ability to gain adequate nutrition.
In partnership with LUSH Valley Food Action Society and the Comox Valley Mental Health and Addictions team, this program will train people with mental health issues to work successfully in a commercial kitchen environment with an eye to employment in the restaurant industry.
The work of these individuals will result in the creation of inexpensive meals for people with serious mental health issues..

Homeless Outreach.
CMHA MId Island has Homeless Outreach workers working in Nanaimo and Parksville.
Homeless outreach can assist clients to access income supports, medical services, and housing.
They can also help to arrange housing subsidy, when available, and supports to maintain independence..

Mental Health First Aid.
Mental Health First Aid is a new program which teaches participants how to help someone showing signs of mental health problems or experiencing a mental health crisis.
The course aims to teach people to: a.
Identify when a person may be a danger to themselves or others and take steps to preserve life; b.
recognized the early signs for mental health problems and provide help to prevent more serious problems from developing.; c.
provide comfort to someone with a mental health problem and support them in recovering..
Anyone can benefit from MHFA -- members of the general public, teachers, health service providers, emergency workers, frontline workers who deal with the public, volunteers, human resources professionals, employers and community groups..
This is a fee for service program.

Mental Health Works.
This full-day award-winning workshop is a practical and innovative multimedia learning experience, delivered only by Mental Health Works certified trainers.
This workshop enables managers to: discuss mental health issues with employers; deal effectively with performance issues; avoid discrimination and human rights violations; develop accommodation strategies that work.
This is a fee for service workshop.

Peppermill Frozen Meals.
This is a vocational training program that provides frozen meals to clients of with mental health, addiction and/or homelessness issues.
Six persons with mental health concerns work in the program, cooking nutritious and tasty meals that are sold at a minimal cost to people who struggle with the symptoms of their mental illness.

Phoenix Centre Clubhouse.
This clubhouse operates on the model originated at Fountain House in New York in the early 1950s.
Based on the premise that persons with mental illness need a place to belong and claim ownership, the model emphasizes member participation in all aspects of clubhouse operations, planning and decision making and in the management of their own rehabilitation.
A positive work environment provides focus for all parts of of a person's life.
Phoenix Centre clubhouse is a genuinly empowering place for people living in the community with a mental illness..
Members contribute to Phoenix Centre by helping to operate the program and choosing an area of interest.
In keeping the centre, members gain a sense of accomplishment.
All participation is voluntary..
Orientation tours are available Mondays 2-3pm and Wednesdays 10-11am, no appointment necessary..
The clubhouse currently has over 350 members and sees an average daily attendance of 40.

Recovery Workshop Series.
A 12 week series of workshops focusing on various aspects vital to recovery from the effects of mental illness.
Topics include: what is recovery and creating a personal vision, strengths and self-esteem, physical activity, nutrition on a limited budget, the creative arts in recovery, managing life's stresses healthy relationships, overcoming roadblocks and a four week series to develop a Wellness Recovery Action Plan.
