@camaraimperatriz / (99) 3524-3359 A Câmara Municipal de Imperatriz e o próprio município de Imperatriz foram oficialmente instalados no dia 25 de setembro de 1858, segundo a lei provincial nº 398, que criou a “Villa Nova da Imperatriz”, o que elevava a categoria da povoação de Santa Teresa, fundada em 16 de julho de 1852.
O artigo 5 dessa lei prevê a criação da Câmara Municipal de Imperatriz.
Os primeiros vereadores foram eleitos sob a presidência de uma mesa eleitoral formada por vereadores de Carolina.
O povo votou e elegeu cinco vereadores com mandato de três anos: Amaro Batista Bandeira, Didier Batista Bandeira, Atanásio Maciel Parente, Domingos Pereira da Silva e José Crispiniano Pereira.

Até o ano da proclamação da República (1889), a Câmara de Vereadores de Imperatriz já devia estar em sua 11ª legislatura, considerando o período de quatro anos para cada mandato.
Nesses 31 anos, o mandatário da cidade era o vereador eleito presidente da Câmara.
O primeiro mandatário eleito de Imperatriz foi Amaro Batista Bandeira..
Com a proclamação da República, em 1889, as câmaras municipais foram fechadas: no lugar delas foram nomeados os conselhos de intendentes.
Em Imperatriz, o primeiro conselho foi rejeitado.
Os conselhos se sucederam por dez anos, até 1899..
A partir de 1900, voltam as eleições para vereadores e para os novos mandatários, que recebem a denominação de intendentes e vice-intendentes.
O primeiro intendente eleito foi Dionísio Crispiniano Pereira.

Em 1922 muda o sistema de intendência e passa-se a prefeitura.
Gumercindo de Souza Milhomem é eleito o primeiro e mais jovem prefeito de Imperatriz, com 21 anos de idade..
Depois da derrubada da ditadura de Getúlio Vargas, foi convocada a Assembleia Constituinte que elaborou e promulgou a Constituição Brasileira de 1946, estabelecendo a redemocratização do País.
Em 1947 foram convocadas eleições gerais.
Para o governo do Maranhão elegeu-se Sebastião Archer, para a prefeitura de Imperatriz, Simplício Moreira, para a câmara municipal foram eleitos sete vereadores: Isidoro da Mota e Silva, Brício de Cerqueira Bandeira, Fabrício de Sousa Ferraz, Manoel Mota Cavalcante, Madian Bastos, Urbano da Rocha Miranda e Francisco Alves de Freitas..
