A little information about myself, I was born in Kansas City, Mo. in 1942. My father was in construction and we traveled to wherever the jobs were, eventually settling in southern California. I graduated from Beaumont High School and went on to college at California Polytechnic in San Luis Obispo, California, where I graduated in architecture. In my senior year of college I married Niki (we have been married for 45 wonderful years).
Life is filled with chapters and my first chapter as an adult was working for an architect. I worked in architecture for around six years. During that time I began photographing the landscape in black and white. For fun, I took my photographs to a street art festival to see what would happen. I was shocked when I earned more that weekend than I did in a full week of being an architect. I gave up architecture and became a landscape photographer, beginning a new chapter in my life.
I ended up in a partnership and a business that sold my images to the wall décor departments of Sears, Wards, Penny’s, etc. We eventually had around 200 employees…an office on the east coast in Akron, Ohio and one in southern California. In order to sell more, I changed to photographing in color. My photography took place west of the Rocky Mountains and in the Pacific Northwest. This chapter of my life was filled with a lot of stress. Niki and I decided to move aboard a sailboat to relieve the stress.
Niki, our two children, and I lived aboard a sailboat for about seven years. We were moored in the harbor at Newport Beach, California. No electricity, no TV, no refrigeration…a very rural lifestyle in the middle of a major metropolitan city…but the beauty around us…the feeling of nature…kept us sane.
It was boating that brought us out to Florida. Well, actually it was the television program “Flipper”. I fell in love with Florida through that program and had always wanted to visit. We trailered our boat to Florida, went sailing and realized we were living in the wrong state.
I sold my business and began another chapter of my life in Florida. I began doing street art festivals again. I was photographing Florida in color and wanted to go back to black and white, but was fearful that I wouldn’t be able to make a living at it. In 1986 our son, Ted, was killed when a drunk driver hit the car he was in. In the shock of it, I went out into the Everglades and began photographing with black and white film. I began doing what my heart desired and didn’t care if I ever sold an image. When I exhibited the work, I was shocked that I sold it! And today I am humbled that I am able to make a living making artwork from my heart.
The success of my two galleries wouldn’t have been possible without the help of my wife Niki, my daughter, Jackie, and my son-in-law, Neal, as well as the great employees we have been fortunate to have in our life.
