Sen perusti vuonna 1966 Clare College, joka itsekin oli aikaisemmin (1338–1856) tunnettu nimellä Clare Hall.
Päätös collegen perustamisesta tehtiin tammikuussa 1964 ja sen ensimmäiseksi presidentiksi valittiin vuonna 1965 Brian Pippard.
Clare College lahjoitti uudelle jatko-opiskelijoiden collegelle paitsi vanhan nimensä, myös maata ja rakennuksia Herschel Roadilta Cambridgen läntisistä osista.
