The diverse, multi-sector collaboration of CityLab partners share knowledge, expertise, and risk to reinvent undervalued, distressed urban neighborhoods as catalysts of wealth creation for human flourishing – “better cities for a better world.” .

In 2013, Carey launched its first CityLab neighborhood in Historic Jonestown in Baltimore City.
A second CityLab project was also completed in 2013 by DC Carey graduate business students in the Barclay neighborhood of Baltimore City near the Johns Hopkins Homewood Campus.
In 2014, the third CityLab launched in the Ward 5 industrial corridor of Washington, DC.
Both lab neighborhoods have been identified by city planners and business leaders as target areas for developing innovative business solutions to social and economic challenges.

Students join CityLab project teams by enrolling in CityLab courses offered each Fall and Spring Semester.
Both courses are taken in sequence for the full semester of 16 weeks.
Each CityLab team manages at least one discrete component of the larger urban neighborhood development project.
This active, hands-on learning platform is designed for students to begin building a portfolio of urban social enterprise project expertise as part of their graduate business school experience..

• BU152.740.CityLab Toolkit introduces students to the urban social enterprise domain, key elements of content knowledge, methods of inquiry and analysis, the CityLab neighborhood, context, stakeholders, and the term project to be completed in the Practicum.

• BU152.745.CityLab Practicum is a field experience applying Toolkit knowledge and skills in the lab neighborhood by working with key stakeholders to complete a specific deliverable.
