Detailed description is The local Akron area chapter of Christ Child Society, a non-profit organization dedicated to serving children and youth in need, for love of the Christ Child, through the personal service of our members. Origin. The Christ Child Society was founded in 1887 in Washington, D.C. by Mary Virginia Merrick. It is a non-profit association of lay volunteers who serve children in need without regard to race, creed, or national origin. The Society was incorporated in 1903. The National Christ Child Society was organized in 1916 as a federation of branches (now known as chapters) with a three-fold purpose:. (i) To preserve the founding sprity of the Society;. (ii) To serve as a bond between chapters; and . (iii) To promote the establishment of new chapters.. . National Society. The National Christ Child Society is governed by a board of directors composed of a spiritual director, elected officers and standing committee chairs. THe National Board of Directors represents the Christ Child Society nationally, acts in an advisory capacity to chapters, calls biennial conventions, publishes a newsletter, studies national trends in social service, and calls attention to unment needs.. . The Chapter. Chapters, chartered by the National Christ Child Society, conform to the founding spirit and purpose of the society and abide by the National Bylaws. All Chapters operate under Catholic auspices with the sanction of the Most Reverend Ordinary of the Diocese in which they are located, are autonomous, elect their own officers, set their own dues and select and finance their own programs. There are more than 40 chapters in the United States.. . History of the Akron Chapter. The first Christ Child Society in Akron was established in 1911 to assist the increasing foreign population. A Christ Child Sewing School was formed and 54 children were enrolled. Prayers, hymns, and bible stories were also taught. In addition, infant clothing was distributed throough visiting nurses. Handmade garments were sent to St. Ann’s Infant Home in Cleveland, Ohio, which cared for many of Akron’s babies. . . In 1917, the Akron chapter reported that its members had suspended their work with children due to World War I. Christ Child members volunteered with the Red Cross.. . In 1956, Nancy Flanagan brought from the Milwaukee chapter the necessary knowledge and enthusiasm to renew the work of Christ Child in Akron. Through the kindness of Florence Devine, now deceased, and an honorary member of our chapter, the Cleveland chapter was contacted for help in forming the Akron chapter. The first meeting of this present chapter was held December 7, 1956, with a membership of eight and Nancy Flanagan presiding. The first constitution and by-laws were adopted in 1957, and in 1958 the Akron chapter received its charter at the National Convention..
