I’ve been happy to call the East Side my home for the last 17 years.
You’ve known me as a reporter for NBC 10, a documentary film producer for Providence Pictures, press secretary for the Rhode Island Secretary of State, the voice of Brown soccer and a Realtor helping our neighbors buy and sell homes on the East Side..
Like you, I love the East Side.
It is such a special place to live, work and raise a family.
I have never been more proud to be a Rhode Islander than when we passed Marriage Equality: it is the perfect expression of the best nature of ourselves: committed to justice, tolerance and equality.
I put my first sign in the ground for a Democratic candidate in 1975: I share your progressive values of being pro-choice, pro-wage equity, pro-gun control, and pro-immigration reform..
But in addition to its many wonderful qualities, the East Side and Rhode Island face many serious challenges: our unemployment rate of 9% is the highest in the nation, we were hit with a 15% property tax increase this year, our commercial tax rate is the highest in the country, our public schools are struggling, our infrastructure is crumbling, and our neighborhoods don’t seem as safe..
Over the past few months, I have had a series of extremely enlightening, productive and encouraging conversations with numerous civic, business and political leaders from the East Side.
The common theme emerging from these meetings is this: Rhode Island is at a critical crossroads as we approach the 2014 election.
We are either going to keep doing the same things with the same poor to mediocre results or we are going to vote for bold, energetic change that seeks a new vision and a new path that will enable Rhode Island to fulfill its remarkable potential..
I’m ready to lead and I want to be your voice on Smith Hill.
My sole focus will be on pursuing policies that improve the quality of life for middle class East Siders.
My top priority is jobs, jobs, jobs!.
All the stakeholders: labor, business (small and large), taxpayers, and government at every level must work together to create a climate where economic development can flourish.
We are all Rhode Islanders, we are all in this together, we are all going to rise or fall, together! Let’s concentrate on what unites us, not what divides us.
