Mais il y a environ 10 ans, à la demande du ministère français de l’Ecologie et du fonds américain USFWS/Marine Turtle Conservation Act, Chélonée prit le rôle de gérer des projets dans des pays francophones africains.
Ces projets comportent des volets aide technique aux Etats ayant signé le MoU d’Abidjan, recherche scientifique, conservation, encadrement d’étudiants, formation de gardes, et aide communautaire..
L’association a pour objectifs prioritaires :.
• La conservation et protection de toutes les espèces de tortues marines à tous les stades de leur vie, et leurs habitats.
• L’étude de la biologie de toutes les espèces de tortues marines dans le but de mieux les connaître pour mieux les protéger.
• Faire pression auprès des Etats et des organismes concernés pour une meilleure application des législations et des conventions internationales (CITES, Bonn...).
• Oeuvrer pour une meilleure conservation des habitats terrestres et marins de ces espèces.
• Oeuvrer contre toute exploitation illégale des produits dérivés de ces espèces.
• Agir en justice contre toute atteinte des tortues marines, et de leurs habitats.
• Oeuvrer pour réduire la mortalité accidentelle des tortues marines dans les matériels de pêche, et réduire les pollutions des mers et océans.
• Sensibiliser le public vis-à-vis des menaces pesant sur les tortues marines par des activités diverses : expositions et présentations muséographiques, films, livres, matériels pédagogiques, sorties nature.
• Former des animateurs et des gardes sur des sites de nidification et dans les espaces protégés.
• Proposer des expertises aux régions désireuses de sauvegarder les tortues marines présentes dans leurs eaux et/ou sur leurs plages, tout en respectant les cultures traditionnelles locales et en proposant des retombées économiques par la valorisation pérenne de ce patrimoine (écotourisme)..

Chélonée is a legally French association.It was originally created to connect French researchers and eco-volunteers interested in sea turtles.But about 10 years ago, at the request of the French Ministry of Ecology and US fund USFWS / Marine Turtle Conservation Act, Chélonée took the role of managing projects in African francophone countries.

• Improving conservation of terrestrial and marine habitats of these species.
• Stopping all illegal exploitation of products derived from these species.
• Legal action against any infringement towards marine turtles and their habitats.
• Reduction of the incidental mortality of sea turtles caused by unselective fishing gear, and reduction of marine pollution.
• Raising public awareness about the various threats for sea turtles through exhibitions and museum presentations, movies, books, teaching materials, nature excursions.
• Providing training for field guards in protected areas and field education focused on working in sea turtle nesting sites.
• Providing expertise to communities aiming to protect sea turtles present in their waters and / or on their beaches, while respecting the traditional local cultures and raising awareness about the economic value of their heritage (ecotourism)..
