In the late 1990’s, Child1st’s founder, Sarah Major, was teaching a group of preschoolers and noticed that while all the children seemed to be bright, there were some children that just couldn’t remember concepts from one moment to the next, no matter how often she reviewed with them.
It was as though nothing was sticking to their brains, and she wanted to find out why.
While she was in graduate school focusing on remediation, what she found was that much of remediation focused on testing and labeling the children.
So Sarah decided to study the child first to see what she could learn from them about why they were not able to remember fundamental concepts..

The pivotal moment in Sarah’s career was the moment she decided that her teaching practice would be based on the premise that if a child was not learning, her teaching style and materials needed to change.
She decided to always look at the child first, and then tailor her approach to what produced results, keeping what worked and abandoning what didn't..

For several years, each encounter with a child was a learning moment for Sarah.
When working with children who seemingly couldn’t learn, she doggedly tried one thing after another until she had a collection of tried and true elements to incorporate into her practice.
Working as a Title1 director for Kindergarten through Middle School gave her the opportunity to really study the struggling child and found that no matter the age, the gaps in learning seemed to be consistent, and therefore the remedies were also consistent from child to child.
For the next few years, Sarah developed various materials for teaching sounds and letters, numbers and counting, words and sound spellings that she tested with her students with astonishing outcomes.
The difference these teaching elements made on children who were not learning was as dramatic as flipping a switch, turning the room from dark to light..

In 2006, Sarah retired from teaching to devote herself full time to refining her teaching tools and founding Child1st Publications.
