Implanté dans l'enceinte du 1er Régiment d'Infanterie de Marine, préfecture de la Charente (16), le CFIM a pour mission la Formation Générale Initiale (FGI) des soldats nouvellement engagés dans les régiments de la 9°Brigade d'Infanterie de Marine ( Régiment d'Infanterie de Marine à Poitiers, 126ème Régiment d'Infanterie à Brive, 1er Régiment d'Infanterie de Marine à Angoulême) mais aussi du 31ème Régiment du Génie de Castelsarrasin et du 54ème Régiment d'Artillerie de Hyères.
D'une durée de 12 semaines, cette FGI permet, au moyen d'une instruction progressive et adaptée, de faire acquérir aux jeunes recrues les savoirs-faire et les savoirs-être élémentaires indispensables aux militaires de l'Armée de Terre.

La dernière semaine de formation au CFIM est consacrée à l'évaluation finale pendant 48H, sous forme d'ateliers pratiques, d'une marche et d'un tir lors desquels les Engagés Volontaire à l'Instruction (EVI) restituent l'ensemble des connaissances apprises pendant leur formation..
La formation générale initiale au CFIM se conclue par une cérémonie officielle lors de laquelle les jeunes soldats se voient remettre une Attestation de Fin de Formation Initiale Militaire (AFFIM) qui sanctionnent leur formation.
A l'issue de cette dernière, les soldats intègrent leurs régiments respectifs afin d'y suivre une Formation Technique de Spécialité (FTS) et de poursuivre leur carrière.
