Com a reforma do ensino, através da Lei de Diretrizes e Bases nº 9.394, de 20 de dezembro de 1996, todos os Cursos Técnicos do segmento estadual existentes foram extintos, para que pudessem se adaptar à lei, ora em vigor..

A equipe da escola – diretoria, técnicos, professores, funcionários – e colaboradores do município se juntaram para planejar um novo curso, que atendesse às características previstas na LDB e Decreto nº 2.208, de 17 de abril de 1997, cujo projeto foi aprovado e devidamente assinado pelo MEC/BID/SEE-MG..
