Le Centre d’histoire de Saint-Hyacinthe est né de la fusion du Centre d’archives du Séminaire de Saint-Hyacinthe et de la Société d’histoire régionale de Saint-Hyacinthe.
En janvier 2004, le nouvel organisme prend donc possession des mêmes pouvoirs, des équipements, de la documentation et se voit confier la responsabilité de l’acquisition, du traitement, de la conservation, de l’accessibilité des archives autant historiques que généalogiques.
De plus, il a pour mandat de promouvoir et d’encourager l’étude de l’histoire en organisant différentes activités qui s’adressent à ses membres et au public en général..

Agréé depuis 1992, le Centre est un établissement reconnu par le ministère de la Culture et des Communications du Québec et fait partie des vingt-neuf centres agréés du Québec, dont quatre en Montérégie.
