Detailed description is A free camp for kids who have, or have had, cancer serving kids primarily from Kansas and Missouri.
Camp Hope is a camp for children who have or have had cancer.
It was created in 1982 by "Ma" Donna Brown after she lost two children to cancer.
She wished her kids had been able to have a "normal" camp experience with other kids going through the same thing.
The first camp was held in 1983 and has been held the third week of June every year since.
It is free to attend for all campers and volunteers.
Campers range in ages from 5 through 17.
We typically have 70-90 campers and almost 100 volunteers.
The campers enjoy a "typical" camp experience for the week.
Activities include swimming, crafts, archery, camp fires, a dance, a talent show, fishing and more.
In addition we take the campers into town during the week to golf at the country club, to bowl and to enjoy the city water park and zoo.
Camp Hope is proudly accredited by the American Camp Association thereby giving parents peace of mind that it meets the highest safety standards.
It has a full medical staff that is present 24 hours a day and is comprised of physicians, oncology nurses, ER nurses, pediatric nurses, a pharmacist and a mental health specialist.
This full medical team (usually around 16 members) allows campers even on active treatment to attend as we are able to give IV chemotherapy and other medications at camp.
We also partner with the local hospital in case blood transfusions are needed during the week.
