The Townsend Family was the family donating the Clock in the steeple of the Polk County Court House.
Later in its history from the mid 1920’s to mid 1930’s it was a hospital with Dr.
Gervias D.
Smith as the physician, where many people were born, surgeries were performed..

Then in the late 1930’s Walter S.
White, who had established a funeral home in Bolivar, moved to the house and was later joined by Willard B.
‘Buck’ Erwin, forming the White-Erwin Funeral Home and later the Willard B.
Erwin Funeral Home with Buck’s wife Elsie Erwin.
Then in 1958, Paul D.
Butler and Mary Lou Butler purchased the house and business and started the Butler Funeral Home.
And has been in the Butler Family longer than any of the other owners of the Butler House.
In September 1969, Entertainer Bob Hope gave a Eulogy at the Butler House for his longtime friend and Executive Director, Joan Maas, whose family are longtime Bolivar and Polk County residents..
