Detailed description is Brussels CUSD 42 is a K-12 school district located in southern Calhoun County, Illinois According to Calhoun historian George Carpenter “Two of the first schools in the county were Point Pleasant School and the Bethel School in the southern part of the county.” Point Pleasant School was located south of Brussels and John MacDonald taught there in 1829 and Bethel School, sometimes called Gilman, was located 1 1/2 miles west of Brussels and in 1879 was claimed in as the oldest school in the county.
In 1866 the Bethel School building was sawed in half and moved to a new sight at the base of “Pohlman’s Hill”.
It stood there until a storm in March 1913 demolished it.
Local residents then purchased land for a new building at the corner southeast of St.
Matthew’s Lutheran Church and that building was ready by September 1913.
The school bell from that school building is now on display in front of the current elementary building in Brussels.
The building is now the location of Brussels Lumber & Hardware.

Brussels High School held its first class in 1931 with 21 Freshman attending and by 1935 had 18 Freshman, 9 Sophomores, 15 Juniors and 15 Seniors and became Calhoun County’s first four year high school.
Classes at that time were held in the then newly constructed St.
Mary School building and taught in cooperation with the religious sisters at St.
Mary’s Parochial School.
In 1953 plans were made to construct a new High School and in August 18, 1954 the new Brussels High School was dedicated..

In 1957 the one room schools; Point Pleasant, Brussels, Liberty, Nicholas and Western, were consolidated into the Brussels Richwood Elementary School District # 41.
Ten years later in 1967, the current elementary school was completed and all elementary students in the district began attending there.

41 consolidated into the Brussels Community Unit School District No.
