The Brownsville Bike Barn is an initiative to support and promote bicycling in Brownsville.
Our operation began with a donation of bicycles from the Austin Yellow Bike Project that were in need of repairs.
The City of Brownsville Parks and Recreation Department provided the location and contributed bike parts and tools to get the program going.
Run 100% by volunteers and community support, the Bike Barn offers an Earn-A-Bike program where people of all ages can complete 15 hours of volunteer service and earn one of our repaired bicycles.
Through this program we aim to teach the basics of bicycle repair and the value of sweat equity.
For those whom own bicycles already, the Bike Barn offers small repairs for donations, whether it is cash, parts, tools, or their time.
Currently we are in the process of developing a Heritage Garden Habitiat which will be filled with indigenous plants that provide food and habitat to birds and butterflies.
There will also be herbs, fruit trees, berry bushes, and two beds with organic veggies to model the community gardens around the city.
