Detailed description is The Block-Heads tent is the third oldest chapter of the Sons of the Desert, the International Laurel & Hardy Club. Oasis #3 was "foundered' in March 1966. The Sons of the Desert was founded in New York City by Laurel and Hardy's official biographer John McCabe in May of 1965. By the end of the year, a second chapter began in Detroit, Michigan, which met in the Detroit Press Club. . . Publicity about the fledgling organization was picked-up by the wire services. Seeing the news item, Roy Dunlap, an editor at the Saint Paul Pioneer Press and Dispatch, called the club to the attention of movie columnist Bill Diehl. Dunlap knew of Diehl's love of Stan and Ollie, and suggested that he consider starting a similar group in Saint Paul. Diehl shared the idea with the paper's political cartoonist, Jerry Fearing, who happily climbed on board! . . Diehl used his movie review and Hollywood news column to promote the concept of a local Laurel and Hardy club, and solicited names and addresses from interested parties. Diehl also promoted the group on the air as a radio personality on a popular top 40s station. (Bill Diehl was the emcee when The Beatles made their Twin Cities appearance in 1965.) . . Sixty-six L&H buffs attended the Charter Meeting of the as yet un-named Saint Paul Laurel and Hardy club on Monday, March 7, 1966. Those in attendance decided that they should continue to meet on the first Monday of the month, taking the months of July, August and September off.. . From the start, the format of the club was set and has changed very little since the Charter outing. A typical meeting of the Block-Heads tent starts with optional cocktails and souvenir sales followed by a dinner. A business meeting comes after dinner -- usually monkey-business! -- which is followed by a comedy film program starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy.. . The club's name was selected from the list of (then known) 105 Laurel and Hardy film titles. Jerry Fearing lobbied the club for BACON GRABBERS, reasoning that the moniker was an absurd name for the offbeat group. Bill Diehl campaigned for BLOCK-HEADS, proclaiming that it was the most-fitting title. The vote came out in the favor of Diehl's choice much to the protest of Fearing, who claimed Diehl used strong arm tactics to win!. . The Block-Heads tent gained the title of "Oasis Number Three" when the international Sons of the Desert organization assigned numbers to the tents as a way of keeping the popular-titled tents straight from one another. There are BLOCK-HEADS tents in Edinburgh, Scotland (Oasis #103), Paris, France (Oasis #107), Los Lunas, New Mexico (Oasis #254), and Prato, Italy (Oasis # 258). (Oasis numbers are assigned only once with the current number up to 309. Tents that become inactive, such as the Daytona Beach, Florida, BLOCK-HEADS, have their number retired until tent activity resumes.). . Originally founded as a Saint Paul organization, word soon spread across the mighty Mississippi to the capital city's twin, Minneapolis, and the membership roster expanded. At its largest, BLOCK-HEADS membership topped out at nearly 400!. . The Sons of the Desert held its first international convention in the summer of 1978. Chicago, Illinois was the site, just as it was in the club's namesake film. The "Grand Council," a steering committee made up of representatives from each Oasis, voted to hold conventions every-other year in even years. The BLOCK-HEADS tent hosted the 6th international conclave July 14-17, 1988, in the Radisson Hotel in downtown Saint Paul.. . The tongue-in-cheek Constitution of the Sons of the Desert calls for several society officers with grandiose titles. The "Grand Sheik" is the president of the organization, while the "Vice Sheik" is the second in command (and also "in charge of vice!"). A "Grand Vizier" acts as secretary, while the "Sub-Vice Vizier" is treasurer (and "in charge of sub-vice").. . Bill Diehl served as BLOCK-HEADS' Grand Sheik until stepping down in May of 1969, turning the club over to noted Hal Roach Studios afficionado and author Richard W. Bann. Dick Bann moved on in 1975, with Vice Sheik Larry Leventhal (a prominent Minneapolis attorney) temporarily taking the reigns until a special election was held in February of 1976, when Robert Campbell assumed the position. Current Grand Sheik Tracy M. Tolzmann was elected in June of 1979.
