Detailed description is Parents As Teachers is a "FREE" program to your family as long as you live within the Bismarck School Dist.
You will be provided once a month, in home visits & group meetings in various community locations, community resources, & Developmental screenings.
We serve anyone that is pregnant, teen parents, any child ages 0-5 yrs.

PRIVATE VISITS -The private visit is where the journey begins.
We offer private visits to your home ( at times that are convenient for you with a parent educator ).
Your parent educator is highly trained and eager to partner with you and your family.
During the visit your parent educator will share valuable child development information.
Knowing what is typical for each stage of development allows your parenting confidence to increase.
By helping you observe those important milestones that your child is achieving, your stress goes down and enjoyment goes up.
Often using everyday items, your parent educator will show you how they can be just as beneficial for your child as expensive toys.
She may ask you about the goals you have for your child(ren) and support your efforts while you reach them.
At the end of your visit she will leave easy-to-read handouts that offer additional information and activities to enhance your time with your child..
The average length of a private visit with your parent educator is 50 minutes.
If there are multiple children in the same family, the private visit will be 1 hour 40 minutes.
The time between your private visits will vary depending on the needs of your family.

GROUP MEETINGS -Our meetings help families develop lasting friendships and form new support networks.
Parents have an opportunity to share their common experiences and concerns and discover they are not the only ones facing challenges in their parenting role.
Parent meetings are an essential component of every Parents as Teachers program.
They are designed to offer supplemental information and compliment the topics discussed during private visits with a parent educator.

Parents enrolled in the PAT program will receive information on the up-coming group meetings.
A variety of topics are offered, from guest speakers, parent/child concerts and activity times, to informal discussions on topics of interest like toilet learning and language development.
While reservations are not required to attend, they are certainly appreciated.
You are welcome to attend meetings as frequently as you wish.

DEVELOPMENTAL SCREENINGS-Screening is a way to collect periodic information about your child providing you with an increasingly clear picture of your child's relative strengths and weaknesses.
The developmental and health screening is an essential component of Parents as Teachers programs.
The screening involves fun "games", observations, and question-answer items.
These standardized instruments measure developmental progress and can expose potential problem areas, which may inhibit learning.
Parents are encouraged to be with their child during a screening..
The screening process consists of motor, language and social skills, vision, hearing and a health questionnaire.
Screening is NOT an IQ test but a way for parents to observe what their child knows.
If the screening results indicate that further evaluation is recommended, the parent educator or screener may suggest several other specialists or agencies that could take a closer look at your child.
Of course, your pediatrician is always the best place to begin if you have any questions or concerns about your child's health or development.

The screening will be done at home with your parent educator for children under the age of 3.
The screening visit takes about 45 minutes.

The screening for children ages 3 to kindergarten entry takes about an hour and will be done at the preschool/Kindergarten Screening.
