Betsy obtained a B.A.
in Art at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa and immigrated to Canada in 1973, becoming a citizen in 1980.

Betsy initiated the Toronto Women Writers’ Collective (1975 -1981) that offered peer-writing workshops and numerous public events.
Moving to Vancouver, B.C.
in 1981, she initiated and was the co-organizer of the Women and Words/Les femmes et les mots conference that brought 1,000 women from across the country involved with all aspects of the written word.
Warland has published eleven books of creative nonfiction and poetry..

Dedicated to emerging writers, Betsy is the former director of The Writer’s Studio, part of Simon Fraser University’s Writing and Communications Program (2000 -2011).
She currently directs and is a mentor in her own five-month manuscript development program, Vancouver Manuscript Intensive.
Betsy is on faculty in both programs.
A manuscript consultant and editor for individual writers and authors, Betsy also teaches creative writing courses, workshops and retreats..

An active member of The Writers’ Union of Canada, Betsy served on the TWUC’s National Council (2009 – 2012)and is the co-founder, along with Myrna Kostash, of the Creative Nonfiction Collective.
